The 2020 READY.SET.SAFE Challenge winds up this month. The year 2020 has provided many opportunities to measure our personal preparedness levels on a number of fronts. Availability of basic sanitation and food supplies were problematic for several weeks when COVID-19 spread throughout the world. The M5.7 earthquake we experienced in March was a strong reminder that we live on an active earthquake fault. Hurricane-force winds in September caused property damage throughout all of northern Utah. From a disaster standpoint, the year 2020 has been one for the books!
We hope the information sent out in the ward's weekly emails throughout the year helped you to increase your family's temporal preparedness levels. If nothing else, we hope you learned how vital it is for your safety, and your family's safety, to do the following:
1. PLAN for emergencies,
2. PREPARE your home with supplies and equipment for emergencies, and
3. BE INFORMED about what you should do and what supplies you have on hand to most effectively cope with emergencies that might occur.
Per Sandy City and Salt Lake County emergency management officials, the following disasters are the ones most likely to occur in our area: earthquakes, power outages, high winds, lightning, winter storms, floods, fires, hazardous materials, and terrorism. This information is included in Part 1 of the Ward ERP.

● Part II of the ward's ERP includes critical information that will help improve overall safety in the aftermath of a disaster until we can either evacuate or the professional emergency responders can reach us.
● Part III outlines the procedures Sandy City has asked its different neighborhoods to follow should a significant disaster impact our area.
● Part IV outlines how we will communicate and receive emergency notices during and after an emergency if cell phone towers are compromised, or electrical power lines are damaged.
