Basic home safety should be a family affair, and what better way to involve all family members in a family discussion about safety than with a family activity! Below are a couple of activities you might consider doing to get everyone on board to make your home a safer place to live.
(1) Many home safety videos are available online that are tailored for children. One example of this is the kids' animation series featuring Roy, Amber, and Robocar Poli. The videos focus on different aspects of home and neighborhood safety, and make the learning process entertaining.

(2) Divide your family into two teams, e.g. boys v. girls, teens v. parents, etc. See which team can identify the most potential hazards in each room of your home. Put together a master list of items that were identified, and work together as a family to lay out a plan to mitigate them. Hold regular family gatherings to see what progress is being made on the home safety front.
A fire extinguisher is a piece of safety equipment no home should be without. But it's useless unless one knows how to operate it. Click here to watch a video put together by Consumer Reports that shows you how to use a fire extinguisher before you need to use it!
Every 17 minutes, a piece of furniture, TV or appliance tipping over causes an injury in the U.S., according to information provided to Consumer Reports by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. In fact, a child is killed by a falling piece of furniture in the U.S. every two weeks. One way to prevent tip-overs is to anchor large pieces of furniture to the wall.
